There is too much content hinting (or shouting) that eating the same thing over and over is wrong. Variety is the spice of life, sure, and I love finding a new recipe to try as much as anyone else trying to control what they can control. But the insistence from ads and influencers for everyone to eat differently, adventurously, exotically (oh no) strikes me more as fuel for consumerism. As much as I’m a fan of outfit repeating, I like to eat a rotation of meals that I can trust to satisfy.
Reading
The last two books I read in 2024 were Meat Love: An Ideology of the Flesh by Amber Husain and Diet for a Small Planet by Frances Moore Lappe (which coincided with listening to the Can I microdose veganism? episode of Search Engine.) Meat Love is a slim read, Diet for a Small Planet a tome (that I’ve meant to read for a while) and both worth the time if you’re interested in eating less/no meat and talking about why.
Writing
Spurred on by
’s newsletter workshops, I’m shifting my workflow. My goal is to write about three weeks ahead and have an editorial calendar spanning the next six months. I’m about halfway there as of writing this. This year I have some writing outside of the newsletter I want to complete and that’s motivating me to work a bit differently.Eating (and drinking)
Grain, bean or tofu, vegetable. Pasta. Soup. And repeat. I’m feeling overstimulated from the holidays and leaning on eating the same things over and over. For fun, Michael and I split a wine club membership and we try three new bottles a month. The wine itself and the reminder to get together and share them is one of my favorite habits I picked up in 2024.
The Good Enough Weekly comes out on Fridays, alternating essays and shorter updates. I also take on freelance editing and writing projects. Reach out if you’re looking for help in those departments — I’ve worked on everything from zines to textbooks.
I always find it confusing when you suggest a dinner option and people say "actually, I just had Mexican/Thai/whatever the other day, so...."
So... you can't eat the same cuisine twice in one week?
Silly.
i never even thought about having a local wine subscription! i did some digging and found a cool one near where i live - thank you for the idea!
